Biedermeier Sofa in Birch with Mythical Creatures and Black Upholstery, 1820

OBJEKT ANFRAGEN

An exceptional example of early 19th-century German craftsmanship: this rare Biedermeier sofa, crafted around 1820 in Northern Germany, captivates with its bold presence, elegant proportions, and exquisite detailing.

The frame is veneered in birch, finished with a traditional hand-applied shellac polish that brings out the wood’s warm, honeyed tone. The striking highlights of this piece are the polychrome-gilded mythical creatures on either side—carved winged serpents that reflect both superb craftsmanship and symbolic imagination. These fantastical figures lend the piece a dramatic, almost mythological aura, making it a true statement piece.

The black upholstered seat and backrest are covered in a subtly patterned fabric and outlined with a matching welt cord, evoking the refined upholstery typical of early 19th-century salons. The visible underside reveals the original coil-spring suspension and handwoven webbing, a testament to the sofa’s authentic, high-quality construction.

Condition:
The sofa is in remarkably well-preserved condition, with only minimal signs of age. The gilded carvings retain a beautiful, mellow patina, and the frame shows only minor wear consistent with its age.
